Crash Analyst Christopher Peet from the Counties-Manuaku Police took an hour out on Saturday the 18th June to talk to the Neighbourhood Support team about his work.  His chat and the videos were fascinating and eye opening, as none of those present realised the extent of the research and investigation the crash analysts do as they strive to determine what actually happened at serious vehicle crashes.

The air bags in your car are just that right?  Actually we learned that the recent models are computer driven and resemble the “Black Box” that air crash investigators look so hard to find.  The air bag box in a crashed vehicle tells the investigators a myriad of things.  Such as when the brakes were applied, the speed when they were applied, what speed the vehicle was doing at the moment of impact, and much, much more.  And talking of speed, we saw a video of a car hitting a crash dummy at 50km and again at 55km. The impact at 50km per hour resulted in serious injury.  The impact at 55km per hour was fatal.  A massive difference for a 5km per hour increase in speed. If you get the chance to hear Chris, take it…. It might save a life.

I would like to share a recent theft from a motor vehicle incident that was reported to Police. The Victim parked her vehicle at a local car park while she enjoyed dinner with friends. Two hours later, upon returning to her vehicle, she found that a window had been smashed. Her handbag, passport and over $2,000 cash was stolen. Read more…..

The Auckland CDEM team has been undergoing an organisational change process. The purpose of this change was to design and implement a future facing, fit for purpose structure ensuring effective capability within the team to deliver on our objectives. Emergency management is evolving and that is allowing us to aspire to a change in our approach. There is a requirement for a fundamental shift from the traditional delivery of CDEM services to a proactive and more strategic approach to building a resilient Auckland, making the community the centre of all that we do.

The new CDEM department structure goes live on 20 June and is a result of staff workshops, feedback from stakeholders and guidance from the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management. An internal recruitment process was undertaken; however a number of staff will not be taking a position in the new structure.

Auckland Transport’s SuperGold Mobile

Auckland Transport’s SuperGold Mobile team will be available in Howick and Botany to assist SuperGold cardholders SWAP to AT HOP.  The Mobile service will entail the loading of SuperGold public transport concessions on the AT HOP card, which will enable eligible senior citizens to continue to receive free travel on trains, selected buses and ferries in Auckland after 9am on weekdays and all day on weekends and public holidays from 1 July 2016.  Download and display the booklet. From today, Civil Defence partners in Auckland, Wellington, Waikato and Northland are using Red Cross’ Hazard App.
The app sends out official emergency alerts and disaster warnings, contains comprehensive information on New Zealand hazards and lets you quickly inform family members you are safe.

Developed by the international Red Cross’ Global Disaster Preparedness Centre, the app has been used around the world, including during Hurricane Sandy in the United States.

Within minutes or hours, a claim can morph from a lone tweet or badly sourced report to a story repeated by dozens of websites, generating tens of thousands of ‘shares’.
