MANUKAU CITY COUNCIL CIVIL DEFENCE ORGANISATION

After discussions at several large meetings of Neighbourhood Support Co-ordinators in Manukau City, it was agreed that all Neighbourhood Support Street Co-ordinators would, in the event of there being a Civil Defence emergency in the City, become and function as Civil Defence Street Wardens Civil Defence have provided a Kit for every Registered Neighbourhood Support Coordinator in the Manukau City Council area and kits are distributed to new co-ordinators as they are appointed.

MANUKAU CIVIL DEFENCE STREET WARDEN DUTIES

  • Whenever alerted, or informed of a state of Civil Defence Emergency in the local area, check with all residents in your locality for the following:

- Injuries
- People missing (particularly children)
- Damage to buildings
- Blocked access to properties
- Damage to services - power, water, phones etc
- Fallen power or telephone lines

  • If you have any urgent problems or vital information report to the Supervisor at your nearest Civil Defence Welfare Centre, either in person, or by sending someone else with a written report. Please do not use the telephone unless it is urgent. The phone system will quickly overload unless people minimise its use.
  • Organise local residents to assist where needed, giving priority to people injured or trapped.
  • Give information about the local situation to any rescue or first aid teams that are sent to assist, and help organise any additional people that they may require to assist them.
  • Keep a watching brief over all people involved, with regard to their own wellbeing. Organise relief and refreshments where possible.
  • Ask the Supervisor at the Civil Defence Welfare Centre to arrange assistance for you if required. He/She will be in communication with the Manukau Civil Defence Headquarters.
  • Wear your yellow Civil Defence jerkin to identify you as a Street Warden.

NOTES : It is important to remember that Headquarters can only react to information they have. Street Wardens should pass vital information on to their Civil Defence Welfare Centre Supervisor, giving updates on the changing situation, should it be required. Keep your lists of skills and resources of Neighbourhood Support Group members (in the kit) up to date, so that you will be able to use “self help” within the group and so reduce the strain on other resources. If the situation in your area is OK, you may be able to offer the assistance of some people to help out in neighbouring areas.
In your area, you are the eyes and ears for the Civil Defence Controller. Your role is important !
